Tom Yost has a great idea-attatch a metal tube to the rack running along the long axis of the car the hook the saddles or what ever to actually hold the boat to the tube. Tada as much seperation as you could ever wish. He has posted a picture or 5 in the recent past.
I bought a used volvo wagon. Then found out the only rack I could buy was from volvo. Not a lot of distance between the two bars. I have only carried a sof and a big poly rec boat on it so far. Other than putting a scratch in the tailgate door it worked ok.
I will be rigging up something grander to bring my sof back from Oregon. Gonna take Brian S.'s class in August!!!
