I did some looking around on this since I was considering an Outback and the rack issue worried me. I found a post from a Thule rep where they put two 16'+ kayaks on a roof (150 lbs. rack + yaks) and drove around at 85 mph and found no ill effects. Their opinion was the Outback rack is fine. I emailed him and he said that any of the hull-down options should have no problems.

Just something else to consider.

: The Forester may be a good option. It still has the older rack
: system with the wider span and is about the same height as the
: new Outback. I can still lift that height now but I doubt I will
: lift that high in 10 years and I like to drive cars for about
: 200,000 before I give up on them so this is a long term thing.
