: Too bad you're forced to endure life in the tropics :-) Here in OH,
: Craigslist always has a handful, on sale for a fraction of the
: sticker price. Look into used if that's the way you decide to
: go. A lot of the sellers here are retirees selling homes to move
: to condos, or guys who realized they haven't used them in years.
Yes it kills me when I peruse Craigslist in the US and see all the deals that I miss out on.... eBay too. A guy just had a Delta contractor saw with extensions and a Freud stacked dado set, Delta tenoning jig AND a mortising attachment for a drill press, PLUS five Bessey 50" clamps AND five bar clamps... I'm not done yet... a pocket hole jig, a blade adjustment guide, a bunch of push sticks and feather boards, an Excallibur fence system, thin-kerf blade, and more for $425 Buy it now. sick! He was in Virginia. Too far to ship. I asked if he'd sell all the stuff separate from the saw and someone bought it before I even hit "Send".
Also on eBay a 6' x 9' CNC router table went for $1300. Insanity. Anyway I have to find stuff in Miami and pick it up when I travel or have it shipped. There doesn't seem to be a whole lot of woodworkers in Miami. Stuff is limited. I think there are five plastic surgeons to every one woodworker in Miami. Maybe I need to look for a laser cutting tool instead of a saw!!!
Actually I finally found a Ridgid tablesaw here that a friend has and it has the caster set that lifts up and down. I still want a Shopsmith one day as a dedicated drill press and part-time lathe. I think they're kind of neat. Like you said- you can get them cheap used- parts too!
Well at least my Home Depot has a dyslexic guy pricing stuff. I got another deal- a brand new Ridgid 13" thickness planer for $199 regularly $399. All the other ones were marked $399 but this one was $199. I am now making weekly trips to HD just to see what pops up next.
