: I fill between the strips and the
: internal stem with a very thickened batch of epoxy that's almost
: dry with so much thickener, doesn't weigh much, and radius that
: between the strips and the internal stem to create a solid mass
: at the ends. I also use a partial sheer strake to make bonding
: the deck down easier, goes back far enough that I don't have to
: reach much past the hatches to tape the rest of the hull/deck
: together.

That's been my latest method as well. Naturally I double drill the hole for the toggle (drill oversized, fill with thickened epoxy and when dry, drill the correct hole) so the end grain of the inner stem and the strips are sealed and reinforced.

Another option is to install a fiberglass tube fitting (ala Maroske) in very end of the deck. It's not as strong but then again, like one of my customers said, "It's a rescue toggle, not a carrying handle." Very true...
