: I had to store a partially built S&G for a couple of years
: outside and although it was wrapped up, the wrapping leaked and
: now I've got water stains all over the un-glassed deck. There is
: also some black mold stains in a few places. Is this
: sand-out-able or am I facing a paint job for the deck? I'm
: afraid the outer layer of the marine ply is too thin and the
: stains would go all the way through the layer. I guess if I
: can't get the stains out I could just stain the whole thing but
: that's not what I really want to do. Thanks for any help you can
: give.

Paul:
You will need to eliminate the mold before you can do anything. Chlorine bleach will do it, but could also affect the color of the wood. Don't be afraid to paint it though. Some of the most stunning plywood kayaks out there are painted. I can tell you from experience that it is also a lot easier than varnishing. Use a high-build primer, sand most of it off, then roll on the paint and tip it out with a foam brush. -Wes
