: Hello, hope all is well with everyone...
: I need some help. I'm putting on consecutive coats of varnish on my
: sof sea tour 15 exp, stapled polyester cloth. My first idea was
: to put on 3mm thin sipo rubrails to hide the staples. How would
: i go about this ? Most of the info i found so far mentions using
: screws and epoxy to attach rubrails. This works with thicker rub
: stock and the sipo i have tends to split quite easily. 3M 5200
: or an equivalent ?
: Another thought was of putting on some kind of webbing - tape, but
: there are some wrinkles were the staples are, so this would
: probably show (carbon or kevlar tape a good idea ?).
Hi George,
I must have missed this post somehow , anyway I've used wood rubrails on two SOF's so far. I've used brass screws like Paul mentioned and works fine. I don't use a sealant under them so the rub rail can easily be replaced afterwards. The screws only add a tiny amount of extra weight, think mine were #4 x 1/2", pretty tiny. The holes in the rail need to be pre-drilled and countersunk, you want flat head screws slightly countersunk below the surface. Having them even slightly raised is a really bad thing, the edges are quite sharp and will remove skin very quickly if you rub against them. Screw them in to be just snug and you shouldn't have a problem splitting the wood.
Oh yeah mine are like 1/2" wide by 1/4" thick.
