Epoxy air cures well, polyester doesn't. Cure well in contact with air, that is. Epoxy is also stronger in resilience than poly so can be made lighter/thinner for the same strength. Fumes aren't a major problem with epoxy.
Oh yeah, the epoxy is on hand. :D
Those points are often worth the extra cost in money.
