You might like to read the book by the woman who started out with Don Starkell and then went on to finish the trip alone after they split up. I like it much better than Starkell's account:
Kabloona in the yellow kayak: One woman's journey through the Northwest Passage (Paperback) by Victoria Jason. (she didn't end up having to be rescued and having frozen fingers and toes amputated.)
