I am looking to build my first kayak, and I thought I would try to make one using similar construction to a canoe my Dad and I made years ago. We used plywood on edge for ribs and strips of wood along the length of the canoe. We then stretched denim fabric over the frame and coated it with Spar Varnish. I now know that this is a type of Skin-on-Frame design, and is quite common in kayaks. However most of the designs I see for kayaks use bent strips for the ribs, and frankly look to be a bit more involved than the construction methods we used on the canoe.

However it looks like this was a bit of an amateur design, and I wanted to get some other opinions on it before I bought the plans.
Has anyone here built one of these, or have any observations about the design that might be usefull?
I should note that I am looking at the 12' model. I am 200lbs, and I plan on using it for short outings on local slow moving creeks and small lakes and I would like to be able to do some limited fishing from it. Is the 12' model just way to small?
