Not sure on canvas. It's been decades since I used canvas on one, so don't know the price, nor best coatings (some use latex paint on canvas). Canvas might be tougher. The PVC is fairly prone to abrasion, but is easy to repair, using a patch, and the same HH-66 glue used in skinning. As I recall, PVC material and glue for a 17 ft. Sea Rider ran me around $85. By comparison, the 12 oz. nylon and 2-part polyurethane from Spiritline that I'm using now is about $150.

Actually, Yost's step by step instructions will get you through the project. Make sure you read the wood frame construction manual, and then the PVC skinning manual, screen by screen. I printed every screen to read on paper, when I did my first one.

You do need something for a strongback. Its purposes are mainly layout for frame spacing, and, more importantly, a place to anchor the supports for the first and last frames. These frames are elevated a specified amount, and are the basis for the construction method, which is pretty slick. The other frames are also elevated a specific amount from the strongback base, and these elevations control the boat's rocker.

: I like the Sea Bee 13. I am trying to keep costs down to a bare
: minimum to hopefully make this build a reality in the very near
: future. Would using canvas rather than PVC cut costs much?
: It looks like Yost's site gives the basic design information
: (perhaps targeted at experienced boat makers) rather than a
: step-by-step how to. However I found a site where someone
: tracked their build process
: (http://flutterbyfoto.com/kayakDiary.html). Is it required to
: use the strongback to build the kayak, or can it be built off of
: the keel?
