: I am looking to build my first kayak, and I thought I would try to
: make one using similar construction to a canoe my Dad and I made
: years ago. We used plywood on edge for ribs and strips of wood
: along the length of the canoe. We then stretched denim fabric
: over the frame and coated it with Spar Varnish. I now know that
: this is a type of Skin-on-Frame design, and is quite common in
: kayaks. However most of the designs I see for kayaks use bent
: strips for the ribs, and frankly look to be a bit more involved
: than the construction methods we used on the canoe.

: I have found a site that has plans for a kayak built the same way
: we did our canoe. - http://www.thewoodshop.20m.com/kayak1.htm
: However it looks like this was a bit of an amateur design, and I
: wanted to get some other opinions on it before I bought the
: plans.
: Has anyone here built one of these, or have any observations about
: the design that might be usefull?

: I should note that I am looking at the 12' model. I am 200lbs, and
: I plan on using it for short outings on local slow moving creeks
: and small lakes and I would like to be able to do some limited
: fishing from it. Is the 12' model just way to small?

Boy, that is old timey. Looks like something out of a 1950's "Popular Mechanics".
Today most of the bulkheading is done mostly with plywood but some with HDPE.
Don't fall in love with a short boat. The test of a design has nothing to do with how easy it is to handle on land. Notice that the Inuit built mostly 16-17 footers even tho' wood was hard to come by. That was because longer hulls went farther with less effort. They had more glide. Short hulls yaw much more too. They tend to snake thru' the water so going from A to B takes more time and effort. You can build a 15 footer that will be less than 40 lb. so why settle for a 12 footer?
