Justin,

I built a kayak very similar to that one many years ago. I used it in a subsistance lifestyle in bush Alaska for years. I shot and transported deer, I packed fresh water to the cabin, and I used it for exploration among the myriad islands.

The boat was very stable, moved very well, carried weight fantastically well, and was very durable with canvas sailcloth. It never came close to rolling, something that many on this forum will consider a bad thing. You could stand up in it, you could sit on the side deck if you kept your cg inboard.

The only fault I can cite is that it is heavier than more modern boats. You can see that it uses more frames and more stringers, and heavy canvas with heavy lagging adds weight. Having weight in a boat is only a detriment if it's so low volume that it cuts into the boat's capacity, or if you want to be able to carry it long distances. Otherwise having some boat weight is beneficial; native kayak users ballasted their boats with rocks to make them seaworthy and seakindly.

If you like the looks of the boat you asked about then build it. You will not be disappointed with it.

Best,

Michael
