: Justin,

: I built a kayak very similar to that one many years ago. I used it
: in a subsistance lifestyle in bush Alaska for years. I shot and
: transported deer, I packed fresh water to the cabin, and I used
: it for exploration among the myriad islands.

: The boat was very stable, moved very well, carried weight
: fantastically well, and was very durable with canvas sailcloth.
: It never came close to rolling, something that many on this
: forum will consider a bad thing. You could stand up in it, you
: could sit on the side deck if you kept your cg inboard.

: The only fault I can cite is that it is heavier than more modern
: boats. You can see that it uses more frames and more stringers,
: and heavy canvas with heavy lagging adds weight. Having weight
: in a boat is only a detriment if it's so low volume that it cuts
: into the boat's capacity, or if you want to be able to carry it
: long distances. Otherwise having some boat weight is beneficial;
: native kayak users ballasted their boats with rocks to make them
: seaworthy and seakindly.

: If you like the looks of the boat you asked about then build it.
: You will not be disappointed with it.

: Best,

: Michael

Thanks for the info! To be honest I am still a bit leary about that particular design, and I don't plan on carrying much in the way of cargo. I really want a boat that is fairly stable, and reasonably easy to paddle and steer. After looking at a lot of designs and info given by the great people on this forum I am leaning toward Yost's Sea Bee, although it may be a while before I can save up some cash for materials.

Thanks,
Justin
