I think the Dura Tuff has been a fine coating. I know many other people who are far better boat builders than me, and they are happy with it also.

I was happy that I could get 5 coats on in a day with DT. However, it is very toxic, and you will need lots of ventilation (do it outside, let it dry outside) and a *very* good organic respirator. I smelled it through my respirator, and I had a headache, which means my respirator is not very good.

You had said previously that cost was a major factor for you. I believe the Zar varnish will cost less than Dura Tuff. Last I saw, DT was about $25.00 per quart, might be more now. (Yep, $27.95/qt now. www.creative-wholesale.com) There are many satisfied Zar users.

In my opinion, based on the opinions of others I am familiar with, I would say the best coating for nylon is Coelan. However, Coelan is also the most expensive that I know of. It was designed to have something like a 300% elasticity, and therefore, it's elasticity is matched well with the nylon's elasticity. Again, don't confuse elasticity (stretch) with flexibility (bend.)

I believe you could paint your nylon skin with just about any oil based paint, even Rustoleum enamel, and get serviceable results. Heck, if the coating is bad, but you love the boat, just re-skin with something else. Or, better yet, build a whole new boat :)

Brian

: Hmmm... Would you consider the lack of elasticity a show stopper,
: or just something to be aware of?
: I really liked what some people said about Dura Tuffs abrasion
: resistance (dragging a kayak across pavement without a scratch),
: is there something else out there I should be looking at? I know
: that there are almost as many kayak coatings as there are
: kayaks, but there have to be a handfull of products that just
: perform way better than the others...

: Thanks,
: Justin
