: I tried the double layer skinning method on a SOF for the family. I
: built it late last fall and haven't had a chance to take it out
: yet. The heat-shrink Dacron was great to work with and made a
: really nice, yet thin, covering on it's own. As a twist, instead
: of using fiberglass for the outer layer I used some Vectra
: cloth. It's similar (supposed to be superior) to Dynel and is
: very abrasion resistant. I've used strips of it on stems for
: wear strips with great success. The 4 oz woven fabric was pretty
: inexpensive: about $4.00 a yard. It'll be interesting to see how
: it fairs as a skin.

Btw, I've still got plans here, no time yet, to try a carbon fiber frame SOF. Trying for a really light kayak that's still durable. Course it won't be cheap nor anywhere as simple to build as the wood frame one. Have an idea for making CF tubes easily, just need more free time.
