I think the first place to start to answer this is to pick the back band you want to use. Not all of them attach the same, so you really won't know how to proceed until you can see what you're working with. I just bought a back band for my Night Heron because I figured it would be cheaper than making a new one out of foam if I figured in my labor, and it would be adjustable. It's got a minimum of three ways of attaching to the hull, and they offer other adapters for free if that doesn't do it for you (Immersion Research). In my case, I decided that rather than cut up my coaming or make some other sort of device I'd use epoxy-in studs from McMaster Carr ( http://www.mcmaster.com/#97590a574/=79qv2w ), like the ones people use for mounting foot rests. The back band has a provision for bolting in and even comes with the hardware.

Of course- you could always make one out of foam...
