Cardboard boats work, temporarily, eventually the cardboard gets wet then they fall apart. It can work fairly long term but not using inexpensive materials, you have to have a way to permanantly seal the cardboard and latex paint won't do it. And spending money on epoxy makes the point of using cardboard kind of silly. There are plans around for a very good homebuilt airplane built out of paper and epoxy, it works fine, it's not inexpensive.

Sure there are cardboard boat regattas, read about the boats, many don't finish because the boats fall apart too soon, the ones that do finish fall apart soon after. Heck they race bathtubs too, no one says that they are the ideal boats, they arn't, it's done for fun.

If the idea is to have fun and an interesting project and you understand you may be swimming back to shore, go for it. Don't though expect it to last more than one trip, so the design isn't really all that important.

Still, experimenting is a good thing.

Btw, if you do this, experiment first before you risk you or your son's life. Find out with testing what works and what doesn't.
