The Inuits didn't use leather for their kayak skins. Leather is a specially processed animal hide. The Inuits used untanned sealskin. Because it was not tanned it was subject to microbial attack that caused it to slowly rot. Once winter had set in the kayaks were stripped to the framworks and a new skin was mounted for the following hunting season.
Use nylon or polyester. You won't regret it.
