: I'm finishing up the fiberglassing portion on my redfish king. Most
: of the mistakes at this point I think came from inexperience. I
: have more resin in the bottom of the boat than I care for, but
: the whole thing still feels fairly light. One big lesson I
: learned has been that off gassing is a big deal, and a sealer
: coat does not prevent 100% of the bubbles. Lesson learned, I
: will never start glassing in the morning again, at least not
: without a climate controlled shop. I ended up with some bubbles,
: which irritated me, so I sanded them out and patched them, this
: has left slightly pale spots, which it seems only I can see, so
: no big deal. Fiberglassing the inside of the hull was a
: nightmare though, things going against me that day, were the
: heat, and living in New Orleans there was the stench of the oil
: on the gulf all over town, it seems to happen less often now,
: unless Im used to it. Thing is, I could not seem to keep the
: glass fabric on the sides of the hull, although I evetually did.
: Bottom line is that I wish I could have taken a class on
: fiberglassing before this project. Im hoping experience will
: make the next boat a bit easier. As for now the biggest thing I
: have learned in this whole process are that mistakes are easy to
: repair, so don't waste time worrying, just fix them.
Your second boat will be "much" easier. Fiberglassing just takes experience, no real shortcuts unless you do find a class.
