I think you may have already answered your own question, regarding the blade. I have had good results with Porter Cable 10 TPI wood blades, in 1/2 inch or thicker plywood. However, my wood would sometimes make big splinters, due to grain direction of the top layer. So, last time, I switched to PC 10 TPI laminate blade, which cut on the down stroke (strictly up/down stroke), and I clamped scrap wood beneath the work piece. Cleanest cuts ever!
