Just as an update, I ran into a fellow at the WMCKA Symposium who'd been using a Yakima BowDown (with the Showboat rear loading assist device), and he was able to load a 60+ lb. 18' kayak solo and drove @ 80 mph several hundred miles without incident.

I haven't been able to find any instance of a kayak having problems with the new Outback rack anywhere, and the 2011s are already out. Should be fine (I take delivery on mine tomorrow :D)
