I was going to recommend the same boats but then I thought about it more: compared to what he's paddling currently these are both very high performance designs. They are smoking designs but are MUCH narrower than what he's used to. It could be quite a learning curve. IF he's looking at learning some advanced paddling, definitely consider the Njord or Hunter.
