That should do nicely--assuming there are no problems with awkwardly-located knots.

Working with 4x4s gives you some options on paddle style and construction. Here are 2 ideas:

1) Rip a 4x4 into 2 2x4s. Then carve each 2x4 into a narrow-bladed Greenland style paddle.

2) Set your tablesaw to rip a piece 1 3/8ths thick. You'll probably not be able to rip this in one pass, so make the first cut about 2" deep then flip the board so you can complete the cut from the other side. Do this again. You'll have two pieces 1 3/8 thick and 1 piece about 1/2 inch thick. Without changing your saw setup run those two thick boards through again and you'll have 4 paddle shafts plus plenty of 1/2 inch material for making paddle blades. Make a cardboard template of the blade shape you like. Trace that onto the wood. Cut it out and glue it onto the ends of the paddle shafts with epoxy or 'gorilla' glue. When the glue has set carve away to round the shafts and thin or scoop out the blades. 1 4x4 can give you 4 paddles. I suggest you make unfeathered paddles first.

Sand and seal the redwood to avoid splinters.

There are lots of paddle designs and paddlemaking instructions in books and online.

After you've made your own kayak paddles try making a canoe paddle. Then whip up a bunch of paddle pieces and let every scout in the troop make their own paddle. It is a good 3 week project for scout troop meetings or patrol meetings. 1st week glue the rough paddle. 2nd week carve them. 3rd week oil or varnish them.
