I'm with Paul on Home depot/Menards wood.
Wood has knots, you are building a wooden boat, knots should be part of it (in more ways than one) The knots, ("features" if you like) can add interest to a large expanse of cedar. Just don't use them where you need to torture the strip. You can also bookmark the strips so you can add bilateral symmetry to your design. http://farm1.static.flickr.com/69/158989008_bde9f1636e.jpg

: those tend to be #2 or better, while the 1x6s and other 1x stock
