They use cedar logs for the canoes. If you want to see some more works of art, check out "Coast Salish Travel Canoes" on Google images. Also checkout the annual Canoe Journey's There will be one finishing in Neah Bay in mid July hosted by the Makah Tribe.
This photo was taken in 2009 when the Lummi Tribe hosted the Journey.
