Well, if you hate the head being exposed, you could always just drill a recess for them and plug the holes, would look nice and work pretty much the same. I'd use flat head machine screws if I were to do it that way instead of the carrige bolts. Recess needs to be at least 1/4", though 3/8" will hold the plugs better.
