I think the twisting occurs because of flex in the end stems. Some reinforcement to make them stiffer reduces the problem. Alternating the application of the strips also helps. Do a left then a right, followed by a right then a left, then left before right. Don't always have the first of a pair of strips applied on the same side. Check frequently so the problem doesn't grow as you add more strips.
