I have used both methods, but my usual is to roll on the first coat and squeegee it out, after it has had some time to saturate the timber and glass, to get out any excess.

for fill coats I just use the roller.

I use eight inch rollers on the whole, but for some parts of the hull interior shorter sleeves are useful.

Don't be too mean, get rid of the sleeves before they start to go off.

Any problems with glassing for me are always down to not getting my shop temps up high enough if I am working in winter.
