I did the same with my (looks around furtively) new plastic kayak. The original back rest was a "monstrosity", one of those flip-up yokes that are higher than the coaming when folded. Took it out and put a minicel block like in your pic, but more rounded at the corner of the bevel. Made her feel much comfortable to paddle, closer to my SoF's, better control too. I'm able to stay 'loose' from the hips up now. Took me one 15 minute paddle to decide.

Tis an Easky 15, by the way, and weighs close to my greenlander, about 40lbs. (I over-built). Except for copyright, I'd like to do a strip version of at least the hull, but small cockpit the deck. Might write to the company and ask about that.
