I left my Kayak in just plain epoxy (System Three Silvertip) for about a month before applying varnish. And I paddled it in salt and fresh water. I did wash it carefully and roughed it up with 200 grit before varnishing.
PLEASE do not put anything over the epoxy before you varnish. I repair gelcoat chips and holes in boats as a means of getting a little cash to purchase boat building supplies to feed my boat building addition. I HATE IT when I get a boat top repair that has been all "greased Up".
