If you head over to the Qajaq USA forums you will find limitless information on the subject. There is a tutorial by George Dyson on materials, which is a good place to start. There are also good articles in The Masik, the Qajaq USA online journal, on the subject.

The only advice I would give is that unless you like the process of skinning, don't use a coating that is less flexible than your skin material.
