Strip: Petrel: Stiff Upper Lip

I'm now considering the construction of the lip on the coaming risers per "The Book". I can understand the need for strength and the reason for laminating multiple 1/8 inch strips to achieve it. I have some 1/8" white ash that I have been planning to use for it.

The process described sounds messy and difficult: buttering and stacking 8 - 1/4" X 1/8" strips separately, then trying to assemble and clamp them to the risers. I dry-fitted 7 strips around the front with a little difficulty - 8 will be even more so. I'm thinking maybe I may want to just do 4 strips, let them cure, then do 4 more strips.

Alternatively, my ash is 3 1/2" wide and I could laminate two pieces together to make a 1/4" board that I could easily cut with the bandsaw to fit the curve of the risers. White ash is a hardwood with a tight grain, good strength properties and little tendency to split and would be glassed on both top and bottom with a 1/4" fillet between the risers and the lip. Also fits my limited supply of clamps. Would this method have other problems?

Thanks.
