Hello all,
I installed one of the surfboard leash cups in my deck in order to have a place to mount a camera using the Kayalu camera mount. I will post pics in sequence. First of all some things to note:
(1.) This is the small cup because I just wanted a small loop on the deck to serve as a padeye. If using for deck rigging you need the large cups, and be warned that a 1/4" bungee barely will fit through the ones sold by Foam Ez. I suggest finding the ones with the plastic bar instead of the brass bar because the plastic ones have more room under as they are molded in higher up than the brass bar which is inset through the side of the cup.
(2.) I have decided that these do utilize a wedge shape to help them stay in. I decided that epoxy alone is not the full force holding them in. They have a step cut into them so that epoxy pools around the edge forming a wedge of epoxy. What I decided to do was to drill a stepped hole to make even better use of this step. The hole is wider at the base than at the top, i.e. drilled with two sizes of forstner bits.
(3.) You need thickened epoxy around the underside to ensure they stay in, and I would probably put a small patch of cloth over it. This one I tested without cloth and it held fine but probably in the future I will lay a piece of cloth into the epoxy for added strength.
I started out by drilling a pilot hole all the way through the deck so I could line the bottom hole up with the top hole. Next I drilled the smaller hole in the deck about 1/8", and changed bits from a 5/8" to a 3/4" so that from the underside there would be a step in the hole. I drilled the 3/4" hole from below, lining the point of the forstner bit up with the pilot hole, and drilling until I saw the hole in the deck open up. Talk about scary! At this point I'm pretty much committed.
The pic below shows the start of the hole in the deck.
