You can use a spade bit, but it doesn't cut as well around the edges as a forstner bit. Also a spade bit doesn't cut a perfectly flat hole so you wouldn't be able to step drill the hole like I did. I suggest a forstner bit. Once you try it you will fall in love. I simply used a forstner bit with a hand drill, being careful to keep it straight.

The dye I used is actually a paint pigment, but West System makes dyes for their epoxy. Unfortunately where I live things are hard to come by and all they had at the chandlery was white and gray pigment. They had some dye intended for two-part epoxy paints like Awl-Grip, and the guy behind the counter said he had used it for epoxy and poly resins. I did a test and it worked, but you have to use just a drop of the stuff for a small batch. A little goes a long way. I recommend finding the proper dye for epoxy if possible.
