I would stick to a forstner bit as well. I used a hole saw, and it brutalized the glass. It even delaminated a bit on the edge of one of the holes. Spade bits are even more brutal than hole saws. If you're building fresh I'd definitely recommend drilling the holes before you glass. It's easier to zip out the glass over the hole than to have to try and mend the glass after you cut the hole.
