Thanks, Malcolm. I'd planned to epoxy the retainer to the disc in advance, and then pull the completed unit up through the hole, with thickened epoxy between the disc/unit and the underside of the deck. Thanks also for the vote of confidence on the plastic retainer. That's good news. Didn't want metal on the boat because of salt damage.

Still not happy with rigging the boat (aesthetics), but gotta get more serious about safety on SF Bay, and these little units seem like the least obtrusive solution to my problem.
