The reason I use Dacron to cover kayaks is to provide a surface to easily apply the glass over. The aircraft dacron is pretty light weight material all by itself. I could be covered the way aircraft are though and be reasonably durable, works on fabric covered aircraft. It's not terribly abrasion resistant though. The materials I'd think would be very easy to obtain locally in Alaska though, with the popularity of small aircraft up there, I have no idea if the uncertified material will be available, you'd have to ask around. The local EAA (expermental aircraft association) chapter will know where to get it.
