: While I can see that technique working well with commercial glass
: tape, or even straight cut tape from cloth, how would you keep
: bias cut tape from completely falling apart with all the
: massaging in the bag and unrolling on the boat?
: The bag seems to do a good job of keeping it together. And, of course it is rolled, so it can't move around very much--little opportunity to fall apart. Bias tape is going to shed some from the edges. That is its nature--but the loose stuff stays in the bag.
Squeezing out the excess and letting a lot of it drain in the bag cuts down on the excess you might need to remove later.
If you are working on flat areas the weave holds a small amount in the pockets between the threads. On a vertical application you might get a problem with drips.
: Also, you still
: need some sort of applicator (brush, roller and/or squeegee) to
: smooth the tape and remove excess resin.
For small areas like cloth strips the edge of a finger--well protected in a plastic glove--seems to do the trick. Of course I usually have a few small squeegees around, but I cant recall needing to pick one up. The squeegees seem to pull loose fibers fro the edges of the strips. I try to poke them back with a finger tip. When the gloves get gunked up with resin its time to change them.
You are not going to be able to get wide pieces of cloth into a freezer bag to wet them, so this isn't going to help if you have to cover wide areas. And certainly not suitable for covering an entire boat But it is a neat trick for wetting out patches for emergency repairs, and for small strips of fabric. Cleanup and mess are practically eliminated. All the mixing of resin happens in the bag. The wetting out happens in the bag. Later you can drop the gunked up gloves in the bag, zip it shut, and trash it.
