Skin-on-Frame: sewing on coaming flange

Hi All,
Cuningham recomends sewing the 3/8"square wood flange/ lip on the coaming with the stiches spaced 2" o.c. this seems way to widely spaced to me. I'm thinking that 3/4-1" o.c. would be better. That would put a lot of holes 3/16" from the top edge of the 7/16" thick coaming. I wondered if that would weaken the coaming to much. Both the coaming and flange are ash. What do you think?
