I took a class and started doing whitewater kayaking this spring. Whitewater kayakers are obsessed with staying warm, which was very strange to me as a sea kayaker. If you are spending most of your time floating, you will probably get cold. If you are paddling, you will be generating heat, and probably a lot of it. In a sea kayak if you get cold you simply need to paddle faster, and you will warm up. (At least to a certain extent.)

I've been reading a lot lately about people obsessed with kayaks and shoe size. You can't really get into a kayak with your feet at 90° to your shin, so it's irrelevant to measure that way. When you're paddling you'll have your feet either splayed or with your feet pointed forward, so again, not an issue.
