I'm looking for a deck mounted compass for my Mystery project. I've currently got a Brunton and it's OK.
I like the Ritchies, but after the higher cost, all the one's I've seen have 12 volt lighting systems--which I can't use. I expect without it they won't be as viewable during night paddles as a compass dial not dependent on lighting. I also don't need the ability to tweak the compass to accommodate for electronics, metal bulkheads and other stuff I won't ever have on my deck.
(My stainless steel coffee mug doesn't cause a problem, everything else is non-metal or far enough away))
What I like about the Ritchie models are the raised dials with the direction at the front of the dial and degrees on the vertical (rear) edge.
The Brunton's and most others read from the back which remain, after five years, counter intuitive to me.
I'd like to prepare a spot on my deck for a compass, radial alternating different woods.
Any suggestions? What have you guys seen and like or use and like?
Thanks
Will
