: I'm looking for a deck mounted compass for my Mystery project. I've
: currently got a Brunton and it's OK.
: I like the Ritchies, but after the higher cost, all the one's I've
: seen have 12 volt lighting systems--which I can't use. I expect
: without it they won't be as viewable during night paddles as a
: compass dial not dependent on lighting. I also don't need the
: ability to tweak the compass to accommodate for electronics,
: metal bulkheads and other stuff I won't ever have on my deck.
: (My stainless steel coffee mug doesn't cause a problem, everything
: else is non-metal or far enough away))
: What I like about the Ritchie models are the raised dials with the
: direction at the front of the dial and degrees on the vertical
: (rear) edge.
: The Brunton's and most others read from the back which remain,
: after five years, counter intuitive to me.
: I'd like to prepare a spot on my deck for a compass, radial
: alternating different woods.
: Any suggestions? What have you guys seen and like or use and like?
: Thanks
: Will
Rechargable 1.5 volt AAA batteries in a small holder will power the light in the Ritchie long enough, couple of days of use, to work.
Friend uses a battery holder like this with a tiny switch to power LED running lights on his kayak, works for about a month or so. It's like a flashlight, these batteries work fine.
