None of the lumber yards around here stock CVG lumber, either (and will tell you they don't have any on hand), though they say they can order it for a hefty price.
HOWEVER, if you spend an hour or so sorting through the usual stacks of common boards, you can very often find very nice clear vertical grain boards that were overlooked at the mill. In fact, I've been able to find near perfect boards, every time, in lumberyards (and even occasionally at a HD or Lowes), in WA and CO and VA. Sometimes there will be a knot, or two, at one end or on one side, but the rest of the board is pristine. It just takes time to cull through the usual stuff - and there's usually just one or two decent boards per stack.
I've read that some yards don't allow this, but have never encountered that.
