They're both called toggles as far as I know, so I have begun referring to them as lift toggles and tension toggles.

I have made a few tension toggles, although ultimately, I never preferred using them. I've used hardware store dowel rod of various sizes, both waterproofed with epoxy and/or varnish, but those things come out looking to sterile, too "machine-made". My favorites are made of cedar, are sanded and carved randomly to approximate antler sections, and are left as bare wood which causes them to turn a decent looking light gray color. They look great, feel great, work great. Let me know if you want pictures.

Beads are great for lifting bungees off the deck slightly so you can slip items like fishing rod or paddle tips under them where you can't reach to lift them. That's the specific purpose of the carved basswood/epoxy sealed sea otter in the photo below. I've made lots and lots of simple beads from cedar, which again, require no finish work, using the drill press as a lathe. A handheld drill clamped to a bench would work too. Chuck a section of 1/4-20 threaded rod, slip on a blank with a 1/4" hole bored through its center, secure blank with a couple nuts, spin and turn down using rasps and coarse sandpaper, finish with finer grits. It's quite easy to do, and tons of fun. Again, let me know if you want pics.
