A consideration when using dye (analine dye) is it's light permanence. Under UV light, most common analine dyes fade. Pigmented dyes do not.
Jay and others who've dyed kayaks before, what's your long term experience with color permanence? (you probably also store your kayaks inside or under cover?)

27 years ago, I dyed a piece of white oak using the dyes an artist friend used on some pieces that later became very very expensive. His were varnished, my little scrap wasn't. After 27 years inside on a shelf, it has faded from rich red to pink. I'm sure his pieces are holding up better, but... it's a consideration.
