I think Shark's point is that there are situations where the best way to safely get out of another boat's path is to stop, back-up or change our course, but that we might be reluctant to do so because we're seeing if we can get 'there' in less time, we have the right of way--why should I have to change course? etc....

Goal fixation is one of the traps that has caused a lot of mountaineering (and other types of ) accidents, another trap is dropping one's guard because you're heading back, (climbing down mountains has killed more climbers than going up). Thomas Mallory is not one of my heros. He died on Everest. Ed Viesturs is my hero, he got within 30 feet of the summit and turned around because to continue he would have to violate his plan. His turn-around alarm went off, he could see bad weather heading his way--he summited the next year. (I know I bring this up every other month. I think it's important.)

Our first goal is to float, second to do so safely, third to go someplace. Go quick, go today are all secondary considerations--especially to #1 and #2.
(We shouldn't attempt number 3 if we don't have a functional kayak, a pdf (#1 we need to float too), and at least two self-rescues.)
