Are you sure these are dyed and it's not just a blue lacquer sprayed over the epoxy coat? Lacquer is see-through and will show through what it is sprayed over if you don't use a solid base coat. I use paua shell sprayed with red lacquer to inlay my logo on wood surfboards. You can still see all the design and "grain" of the shell under the lacquer, and even get the "shimmer" that the shell has through the lacquer.
