There are a few points to this design:

- There are fewer parts
- Alignment of the parts is pretty much predetermined, so there's less possibility for errors
- You can create hull shapes that more closely mimic commercial boats, which often combine hard chines with curved surfaces
- You can create more elaborate shapes than you can with tortured ply

BTW, I found the plans for the longer boat and it's 17'6" x 20.5". One of these days, I'll have to build it.
