: There are a few points to this design:
: - There are fewer parts
Once the parts are glued to length, yes, two instead of 4.
: - Alignment of the parts is pretty much predetermined, so there's
: less possibility for errors
I recommend using a simple jig to build in so alignment has to be right. The rocker and shape is forced to be what it should be so.... ?? I also recommend that the sides be cut longer than necessary so they don't get into the situation often seen with CLC boat questions forum, "My sides are too short, what do I do?" The length datum is taken from the stern.
: - You can create hull shapes that more closely mimic commercial
: boats, which often combine hard chines with curved surfaces
Ply is ply. Do you mean chine all the way to the ends like CLC kayaks vs the chine merging? If so, that's how mine go anyway. The chine vanishes about the same place as this Glen-L method. I always use a "rolled" deck (tortured? Not really, just curved all the way, bow to just about the stern where I put a short flat deck for the rudder to land on and makes it neater for the cables to emerge.
: - You can create more elaborate shapes than you can with tortured
: ply
???
: BTW, I found the plans for the longer boat and it's 17'6" x
: 20.5". One of these days, I'll have to build it.
Sounds about the dimensions of the kayak I'm paddling at present - 5 metres x 0.51 metres.
