I'm not knocking baidarkas, but just wanted to point out that there are advantages for an upswept bow, rocker and reserve bouyancy in rough water.

"Dropping the bow and stern vertically to the water" to increase waterline length is fine for improving maximum speed on flat water. Racing boats tend towards this design. However, they do not ride the same over waves. Lack of rocker and reserve bouyancy will cause a wetter ride and the kayak will broach more coming down waves. Turning becomes more difficult. This is why most rough water sea kayak designs have more bow and stern rocker, upswept bows, and reserve bouyancy.
